The City of Galena is governed by a city council, with the mayor presiding over meetings. For the purposes of governing, the city is divided into four wards. An alderperson from each ward is elected to represent his or her ward on the city council. Two other alderpersons are elected at large and represent the entire community. The mayor and city clerk are also elected at large.
Boards, commissions, and committees support and advise the city council. The city administrator oversees day-to-day city operations, executing the decisions of the city council through the city’s departments and staff.
