Charles moved to Galena in spring 1971, with his wife Sandra, to take advantage of a tourist market in which to sell handmade pottery. He owns and manages Stone House Pottery & Gallery, Abe's Spring Street Guest House and the Artists' Annex. He was a Galena Library Board member 1974 to 1980, serving the last four years as board president. Charles supervised the first library remodeling project, and was instrumental in securing a Farmers' Home Administration Loan for renovation. He spearheaded a consolidation of library assets establishing a trust fund enabling payback of the FmHA loan with interest from the trust fund. Charles served two years on Galena's Safety Committee in the 1990s. He was a member of the City Zoning Board for four and a quarter years. He is also a member of the Galena Bypass Citizen's Advisory Group. Charles has been married to Sandra Riley Fach since 1965. Sandra taught in the Galena District since 1975, and retired in the spring of 2007. They have a daughter, Sasha, who is currently attending Des Moines University. |
