Galena property owners are asked to be familiar with the snow removal codes of the City of Galena and have plans in place to remove snow from sidewalks after each snowfall.
The Galena Code of Ordinances requires every property owner to remove snow from the sidewalks adjoining their property by noon of each day and keep the sidewalks free of snow and ice. Snow may not be shoveled, blown, or otherwise deposited into the lane of the traffic of any street.
The City reserves the option to clear snow from sidewalks adjoining private property if the owner fails to do so. In such cases, the cost of snow removal would be billed to the property owner.
Whenever there is snowfall of three inches or more in a 24-hour period, a snow emergency is declared. During a snow emergency, the City may post certain streets no parking to allow for snow plowing and snow removal.
Starting with the first snowfall on December 28, the Galena Police Department will actively enforce the snow removal codes.
