Plastic Bag Reduction - City of Galena

Plastic Bag Reduction

In 2012, the city initiated a plastic bag reduction project to educate the public about the harmful environmental effects of plastic bag production and use.  Partnerships have been established with area businesses such as Tammy’s Piggly Wiggly and Hartig Drug to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags.  As part of the project, the city created a "My Green Galena" reusable shopping bag.  The bag is available for purchase at City Hall, Tammy's Piggly Wiggly, the Galena Public Library and the Market House Visitor Information Center.
For an entertaining and educational look at the effects of plastic bags and other plastic consumer merchandise on the land ecosystems, the marine environment, and the human body, consider viewing the documentary "Bag It! Is Your Life Too Plastic?" The City of Galena is a licensed user of the documentary.  If your business, group or organization is interested in learning more about plastic bag reduction or would like to schedule a viewing of "Bag It" please contact City Administrator, Mark Moran, at
