Hydrant Flushing Begins August 5

August 2, 2024

On Monday, August 5, the City of Galena water system operations contractor, U.S. Water, will begin flushing fire hydrants. Flushing will occur between 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, through approximately September 4.

Hydrant flushing is important preventative maintenance that helps maintain the integrity of the water system and ensures hydrants are in working order for firefighting.

Please be advised that your residence or business may experience a drop in water pressure as well as some discoloration during the flushing process. If tap water is used during flushing, it may contain sediment and some discoloration. If the water is discolored, simply shut the water off and wait a few minutes. Then run cold water for a few minutes to allow new water to enter your pipes. If the water is still discolored, wait a few more minutes and run the water again. In some cases, discoloration will occur for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not affect the taste or quality. We recommend making sure the water runs clear at the tap before washing items in your washing machine. If discolored water has been observed but has cleared up, it is still recommended that you wash a load of dark items first.

Questions about the hydrant flushing process should be directed to U.S. Water at 815-777-9315 or Galena City Hall at 815-777-1050.
