Prescribed Burns Planned for Gateway Park

October 30, 2025

This fall, the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation and City of Galena will utilize prescribed fire to manage the prairies and savannas of Galena Gateway Park. Be prepared to see burn crews at various times during the next few weeks. Please note, Gateway Park trails will be closed when burning is actively taking place.

What is the purpose of prescribed fire, and who conducts burns?
Prescribed burning is one of the most important tools land managers have in Northwest Illinois. Our ecosystems are adapted to fire. Prescribed burning enriches the soil and enhances native plant growth, reduces and manages invasive species, reduces fuel loads and lowers the risk of large, uncontrolled fires, and more.

Prescribed fires are planned and conducted by state-certified burn managers utilizing a trained burn crew. The burn manager closely analyzes conditions before, during, and after the fire to ensure burns are conducted safely and successfully.

If you have questions about prescribed fire or the ecological restoration work taking place at Gateway Park, please contact the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation at 815-858-9100.
