GALENA­­—Summer is just around the corner, and that means planning for the 2025 pool season at the Alice T. Virtue Memorial Pool / Galena Water Park underway. Opening day is tentatively set for Saturday, May 24. Tentatively, the pool will close for the season on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The City of Galena, Illinois, is seeking a full-time, licensed City Engineer.

Now that spring is here and residents are working in their yards, the City of Galena’s old landfill site on Donegan Street is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The site will remain open daily through mid-May, at which time it will return to being open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the same hours.

The Galena Dog Park large dog and special needs dog sections will remain closed until April 14. 

The City of Galena recommends all residents register with the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to receive important public messages.

New for residents and visitors, Galena Country Tourism has launched "This Week in Galena Country," a weekly visitor's guide feature on it's website, visitgalena.org. The new feature is accessible by scanning the QR code or clicking here.

Electronics are banned from landfills in Illinois and may not be included in the refuse or recycling containers you set out for collection. The City of Galena offers free recycling of most electronics at City Hall the last Friday of each month (changes with holiday schedule) from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Television and computer monitors are accepted during this time period for a recycling fee of $25 per unit.  This is the cost for the City of Galena to recycle each unit. 

Honor or remember a loved one, a family or a pet by sponsoring a bench. The City of Galena has benches available for sponsorship at Rec Park and Green Street Plaza.

The City of Galena is kicking off the year-long process to update its comprehensive plan. This planning process offers an opportunity for residents and the business community to express their vision for the city and identify what issues are most important.
