On Monday, Sept. 14, the City of Galena will begin flushing fire hydrants. Flushing will occur between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday for approximately three weeks.

The City of Galena Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals will have a public presentation on the following item at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at City Hall, 101 Green St., Galena.

The Consolidated Election is scheduled for April 6, 2027. There are five City of Galena seats with terms expiring: four-year terms for Ward I (Cindy Tegtmeyer), Ward IV (Cindy Johnson), At-Large (Jerry Westemeier), and two-year unexpired terms for City Clerk (Hillary Dickerson) and Ward III (Ben Petitgout).

Candidates interested in seeking election may obtain petition papers from the city clerk to begin circulating as early as Tuesday, Aug. 25. Papers must be filed with the city clerk from Nov. 16-23.  

The Galena Police Department is seeking certified officers with full and part-time experience. Non-certified applicants are also encouraged to apply. A portion of the culvert beneath the bike trail near Aiken collapsed on the afternoon of Saturday, June 13.

We are currently working with residents in the Aiken area to ensure access to and from their homes. As part of these efforts, the bike trail will temporarily accommodate limited vehicular traffic until improved access routes to local roads are established.

City staff, in coordination with consulting engineers, are actively assessing the site conditions, including hydrology and hydraulic factors, to determine appropriate next steps for repair and stabilization.

Please be advised that any rainfall may carry water through the damaged culvert, potentially worsening the collapse and increasing safety risks. We strongly urge everyone to respect the cordoned area and stay clear of the site, as conditions remain dangerous.

Barricades are in place along the trail to maintain a safe distance for the public.

We will provide additional updates as more information becomes available in the coming days following completion of the assessment.

All owners and occupants need to remove snow and ice from sidewalks that front or adjoin your property by noon each day. 

The City of Galena has been notified that CodeRED, the third-party platform used for emergency alerts, has been impacted by a cybersecurity incident. As a precaution, anyone who previously registered for CodeRED should update passwords on any other accounts where they used the same password.
